What does green commercial cleaning mean?

Green commercial cleaning is about reducing water, chemical, plastic and energy consumption while keeping the building no messier. Commercial buildings all require cleaning, but a green cleaning program steps back and evaluates how little can be used. If performed correctly, the facility will be just as clean, the occupants will be exposed to fewer chemicals, and there will be less waste in the dumpster.

Equipment does much of the work. RCO's floor scrubber applies solution and vacuums up the dirty water in one pass. The water-fed window system cleans glass using only water that has gone through 7-step filtration. Newer equipment allows crews to use less chemical. Concentrates are mixed at the strength indicated on their labels. Additional chemical only leaves residue and does not clean any better.

Products are selected together with you. During our walkthrough, we ask questions about your company's policies, products you need or don't want us to use, fragrance preferences and sensitive areas such as daycare rooms, clinics or food areas. Should you desire products that feature a third-party endorsement, such as EPA's Safer Choice label, we will build your program to include them. Learn more about what to look for in our guide to green cleaning labels and tools.

Green cleaning still incorporates disinfection when necessary. Restrooms and high-touch areas are disinfected with EPA-registered products used in accordance with their labels, and the program determines where disinfection is necessary and where cleaning alone is sufficient.

  • Fewer chemicals

Advanced technology like RCO's floor scrubber and water-fed window cleaning system allows our crews to use fewer chemicals.

  • Products chosen with you

Does your company have a green purchasing policy or approved product list? If so, the program is designed around it.

What does a green cleaning program include?

  • Product review

We review the products used in your building with you and tailor to fit your company policies and preferences.

  • Measured dilution

Concentrates mixed at their labeled dilution, so there's no overuse and no residue left behind.

  • Equipment over chemicals

With floor scrubbing, extraction and water-fed window cleaning, equipment does more work with less product.

  • Targeted disinfection

Disinfectants used where they're needed, such as restrooms and high-touch points.

  • Recycling support

Recycling kept apart from trash and taken to the area your building's program specifies.

  • Dirt stopped at the door

Walk-off mats and entrances cleaned frequently, because dirt that is stopped at the entrance doesn't have to be cleaned from the rest of the facility.

  • Daytime cleaning option

Cleaning during the day can mean fewer lights on at night. Some buildings prefer this for energy conservation.

  • Liners changed when needed

Liners changed when soiled or full (where your building permits).

How a green program typically runs

This is a typical routine. Your walkthrough decides the actual one for your building.

  1. 1Every cleaning visit

Mixing by label dilution, separating recycling, and focused disinfecting of high-touch areas.

  2. 2Weekly

Entrance mats and entry floors receive additional focus, particularly during salt season.

  3. 3Quarterly to twice a year

Carpet extraction, floor scrubbing and window cleaning are programmed to handle the buildup using equipment rather than extra chemicals.

  4. 4When something changes

When you get new tenants, new policies or new products, we update your program to reflect changes in your building.

Signs a green cleaning program fits your building

  • Your company has sustainability goals or a green purchasing policy
  • Employees or tenants have asked about cleaning products
  • Strong chemical or fragrance smells after cleaning
  • Children, patients or other sensitive occupants use the building
  • Your building is working toward a green building certification

Green cleaning questions

Don’t see yours? Call 248-849-0000 and ask the people who will clean your building.

Does green cleaning clean as well as regular cleaning?

It should. Equipment, correct dilution and good technique do the work, and the same managers check the results.

Does a green program cost more?

No, not always. Price is still based off of cleanable square footage and job needs. The products used are included in your proposal. We will also explain to you how it changes your quote if you have specific products you need.

Can we use our own approved products?

Yes. If you have an approved product list, bring it to us at the walkthrough and we can design around it.

Do you still disinfect restrooms?

Yes. Green cleaning doesn't avoid disinfection when necessary. Restrooms and high-touch surfaces are disinfected with EPA registered products applied according to their labels; other surfaces are cleaned without disinfectant when a disinfectant is not needed.

Can you help with a green building certification?

If your building is enrolled in a certification program that requires green cleaning protocols, we will follow those protocols and provide you with a list of the products we will be using. The certification is between your building and the program.
