How do professionals clean a commercial restroom?

Professional crews clean commercial restrooms from top to bottom: mirrors, dispensers and partitions first; followed by sinks and counters, then toilets and urinals, and the floor last. High-touch points like door handles, flush valves, faucets and dispensers are cleaned then disinfected with an EPA registered product in accordance with its label directions, including how long the surface must remain wet.

A restroom can appear sanitary and still smell bad. Most residual odor originates in areas that a cursory wipe won't reach: around toilets and urinals on the floor, grout lines, floor drains and bottom of partitions. Thorough restroom cleaning reaches those areas on a routine basis, as well as the fixtures everyone sees.

Restocking duties are included with the job. Paper, soap and liners are restocked every visit and low supplies are communicated so nothing runs out between servicing. In higher volume buildings, day porters can monitor bathrooms in between nightly cleans.

RCO provides restroom cleaning services to offices, factories and plants, dealerships, restaurants, medical and dental offices and other commercial properties throughout Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties. Restrooms are inspected by managers because the restroom is the one room every patron will use to form an opinion about your business.

  • Clean, then disinfect

The soil is removed first. Then high-touch surfaces are wiped down with an EPA-registered disinfectant, allowing it to remain wet for the contact time listed on the label.

  • Floors, grout and drains on a schedule

Most lingering odors emanate from floors, grout and drains, so cleaning crews follow a schedule to eliminate the source of odor.

How often restrooms are typically cleaned

This is a typical routine. Your walkthrough decides the actual one for your building.

  1. 1Every cleaning visit

In most buildings, fixtures, high touch surfaces, mirrors, floors, trash and restocking are completed every time it's cleaned.

  2. 2During the day

Busy restroom facilities in offices, retail stores and manufacturing plants typically receive daytime restocking and spot cleaning checks from day porters.

  3. 3Weekly

Partitions, walls behind fixtures, vents and drains receive a more thorough cleaning, generally on a weekly basis.

  4. 4Monthly or quarterly

Machine scrubbing floors and grout and descaling fixtures. Typically monthly for high traffic restrooms and quarterly for light traffic.

Commercial restroom cleaning questions

Don’t see yours? Call 248-849-0000 and ask the people who will clean your building.

How often should commercial restrooms be cleaned?

Restroom cleaning should occur every visit at the minimum and more frequently in high traffic restrooms. Offices, stores and plants with heavy traffic will often include a daytime visit to restock and spot clean. We can recommend a frequency once we have seen your restrooms and know how many people use them.

What do you disinfect with?

We use EPA-registered disinfectants and always follow the label instructions. The label tells you what surfaces to use the product on, which germs it is registered against and how long the surface should remain wet. We always clean surfaces first, because disinfectants can't work through dirt and grime.

Our restroom still smells after it's cleaned. Why?

Typically, the source is the floor, the grout or a drain. Urine wicks down into grout around toilets and urinals. Also, a dry floor drain allows sewer gas inside. Thorough floor cleaning, scrubbing grout and maintaining wet drain traps will normally solve the problem. If it is caused by a plumbing issue, we will let you know.

Do you supply toilet paper, towels and soap?

Stocking up on whatever products your building uses is a crew duty. Whose budget it comes out of, RCO's or yours, is agreed at the walkthrough and put into the proposal. Our guide to commercial cleaning supplies spells out the usual split.

Can you clean the grout too?

Yes. Machine scrubbing of floors and grout is included with periodic restroom maintenance and we can schedule a standalone tile and grout cleaning if the grout is very stained. In large buildings where RCO provides an on-site staff, tile and grout cleaning is complimentary.
