How does RCO Cleaning pick and train crews for Metro Detroit buildings?

Each RCO employee is selected and trained to clean correctly. They are taught how to properly clean each surface. They are also trained to use professional cleaning equipment and supplies.

Our crews have workers who have over 20 years of experience in this industry. The less experienced workers learn from these veterans in actual buildings. Each crew member is trained on the cleaning system of each building before they work in it.

Training doesn't stop after the initial weeks. Whether it be new equipment, a new type of building or just notes from a manager's inspection, there will be more training. If you would like to see what a trained crew would do in your building, call us at (248) 849-0000 for a free walkthrough.

What does our janitorial training cover?

  • Cleaning methods

Cleaning from top to bottom and dusting before you vacuum or wipe floors, so dust doesn't settle on a freshly cleaned surface. Using the appropriate cloth, pad or tool for cleaning each surface.

  • Equipment

Operating RCO's own equipment, including the floor scrubber and floor buffers, carpet extractors, pressure washers and water-fed window system, safely and correctly.

  • Products

Read labels, mix properly to achieve correct dilution, and select the appropriate product for each surface and type of soil.

  • Restrooms and food areas

Store restroom tools away from break rooms and kitchens, so nothing travels between them.

  • Your building's system

The area's checklist, schedule, access and alarm procedures, and your building's rules.

  • Working in occupied buildings

Being discreet around employees and visitors, leaving documents on desks where they are, and not blocking aisles.

Chemical safety and OSHA's hazard communication rule

Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, employers are responsible for informing workers of the hazards of the chemicals they work with. This is done through container labeling, a safety data sheet for each chemical product, and training. MIOSHA enforces safe workplace rules here in Michigan. Here is what that means on our crews:

  • Each product has a safety data sheet and crews know where it is located.
  • Labels are read before using a product and its directions are followed.
  • Products are diluted according to the label instructions, never concentrated beyond those instructions "to be safe".
  • All spray bottles and other secondary containers filled from a bulk container are labeled.
  • Products are never mixed together. Bleach and ammonia will produce a toxic gas if mixed.
  • Gloves and eye protection are worn in accordance with the label or safety data sheet.
  • Chemicals are kept closed, upright and stored away from food and break room supplies.

Safety habits in your building

  • Wet floors

Wet floor signs are put out before mopping or scrubbing begins. They are retrieved after the floor has dried. Spills are addressed when noticed.

  • Cords and equipment

Extension cords are secured along walls, away from doorways and stairways. Machines are inspected before use, and exits are never blocked.

  • Ladders

A ladder of proper height, placed on firm, level ground and used as the manufacturer directs: don't stand on the top step, don't overreach. Pole systems fed by water allow crews to do much of their commercial window cleaning work from the ground.

  • Lifting

Heavy garbage, mats, and equipment are lifted with the legs or rolled on carts. Two people handle what is not appropriate for one.

  • Hazards we notice

A leak, a broken fixture, a loose handrail or a tripping hazard gets reported to your contact, so you're aware of it.

Janitorial safety questions

Can we see the safety data sheets for the products used in our building?

Yes. Request them from your contact and we will send the safety data sheets for the cleaning products used in your building. Find out what is on the sheets in our guide to commercial cleaning supplies.

Are your crews trained for our kind of building?

All crews are trained on the cleaning system that has been written for the building they will be cleaning. This includes any special rules that may apply. If your building has rooms with individual requirements like exam rooms, food preparation areas or production floors, please let us know at the walkthrough so they can be included in the system and training.

Can you use products our organization has already approved?

Often, yes. If your building requires fragrance-free products or a specific type of disinfectant, let us know during your walkthrough and we'll work around it. You can find our tips on which product labels to ask for in our guide to green cleaning in commercial buildings.
